The IEEE has approved the new IEEE 1394 aka Firewire that support for a bandwidth of up to 3.2Gb/s. Apple initially developed Firewire in the 1980s and it has come a long way to the new faster specifications. The new Firewire 1600 and 3200 will be backwards compatible with 400 and 800 ports. The new USB 3.0 will upgrade to 4.8 Gb/s soon. IEEE 1394 is expected to scale to 6.4 Gb/s.
