Nvidia Offers Fermi GF100 Specifications

NVIDIA’s next-generation gaming GPU, the Fermi GF100 graphics processor, has over 3 billion transistors, 16 Shader Multiprocessing core (SM cores) consisting of 32 Cuda cores each, PolyMorph Engine handles geometry on the GPU and is responsible for Vertex Fetch, Tessellation, Viewport Transform, Attribute Setup, and Stream Output functions.

Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said, It’s a brand new architecture which is designed to be a computer first. We call it a supercomputer with the soul of a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).

The Fermi G100 Nvidia GPU will appear late February.

HP Webcams Do Not Track Black People

Some of you may have seen or heard of a YouTube video in which the facial-tracking software didn’t work for a customer. We thank Desi, and the people who have seen and commented on his video, for bringing this subject to our attention.

We are working with our partners to learn more. The technology we use is built on standard algorithms that measure the difference in intensity of contrast between the eyes and the upper cheek and nose. We believe that the camera might have difficulty “seeing” contrast in conditions where there is insufficient foreground lighting.

Intel Launches Next-generation Atom Processor

Intel revealed its next-generation Pine Trail Atom N450 netbook processor, which features longer battery life, 60% smaller than current atom and improved system performance to low-cost laptops. The Atom N450 will run at a clock speed of 1.66GHz. Due to the size of the chip, laptops and tablets using this can be thinner.

For low cost desktop, Intel release the dual-core Atom D510 and the single-core Atom D410.

Blu-ray 3D Specifications Finalized

The Blu-ray Disc Association has announced the finalization of the Blu-ray 3D disc specifications, with support being confirmed for the Sony’s PlayStation 3. 3D Blu-ray will be out in 2010.

Do you need to upgrade hardware? No need, the specification support full 1080p resolution, backward compatibility for both 3D Blu-ray players and the 3D Blu-ray Discs. The new specification will use Multiview Video Coding, a variant of H.264 HD codec, that can separate 1080p pictures to each eye. All you need is the polarized 3D glasses to watch the effect.

PS3 will only require to have a software update to use 3D blu-ray capabilities.

Psystar Must Stop Selling Cheap Apple Clones

Apple wins permanent injunction against Mac clone maker, Psystar and the ruling is the Mac clone manufacturer is no longer allowed to sell systems running Mac OS X.

Psystar is also barred from “intentionally inducing, aiding, assisting, abetting or encouraging any other person or entity to infringe Apple’s copyrighted Mac OS X software.”

Psystar, the Mac clone maker recently taken down by Apple has revealed their plan to sell 1.87 million machines in 2011.

From Psystar: Under its conservative projections, Psystar told investors it would sell 70,000 computers in 2009, 470,000 systems in 2010 and 1.45 million machines in 2011. The firm’s aggressive growth model, however, put those numbers at 130,000, 1.87 million and 12 million during 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively.

Recently, U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup favoured Apple by ruling that the Florida Company Psystar violated Apple’s copyright as well as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) when it installed Apple’s operating system on Intel-based computers.

The rogue company file for bankruptcy indicating that Psystar is more than $259,000 in debt.

Last December, the Psystar latest justification of selling unauthorized Mac systems by claiming Apple does not hold any copyright for its Mac OS X operating system. Psystar also claims that Apple’s Leopard OS, has a stealth code running in the background, which restricts only hardware sold by Apple.

Seagate Reveals Super Thin 2.5-inch Hard Drive

Seagate Technology revealed world’s thinnest laptop and netbook hard drive, the Momentus Thin drive. The drive is 7mm in height and claims to be 25% slimmer than traditional laptop hard drives.

The Momentus Thin drive features two capacity points 250GB and 160GB an 8MB cache, a Serial ATA 3Gb/second interface and a 5400RPM spin speed. The drive is scheduled to ship in January 2010.

Psystar Mac Cloner Will Pay Apple $2.7M In Damages

Psystar has agreed to pay Apple $2.7 million in damages ($1,337,500 plus $1,337,500 lawyer fees) rather than continue to trial in federal court in Northern California. This will likely bring the company’s sale of Mac cloned computers to an end.

Smoking Will Void Your Mac Warranty

This is going to sound strange. Apple’s claim that cigarette smoke can void its warranty. Why? Because the amount of cigarette smoke residue inside the Mac will make it unsafe for the Apple to perform warranty service on them.
