Apple unveiled its new line of MacBook Pro which is twice as fast as the previous generation, AMD Radeon HD graphics processors, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology and a new FaceTime® HD camera.

Thunderbolt, codename Light Peak, is a new high-speed PC connection technology that combines high-speed data transfer and a high-definition display on a single cable. Apple is the first to use Thunderbolt in the market. And this will probably replace USB 3.0.

From Apple press release:
Starting at $1,199 the new 13-inch MacBook Pro offers amazing value and performance in a compact design. The highly portable 13-inch MacBook Pro features Intel Core i5 and Core i7 dual-core processors up to 2.7 GHz and Intel HD Graphics 3000. The powerful 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models feature quad-core Core i7 processors up to 2.3 GHz and AMD Radeon HD graphics processors with up to 1GB of video memory for high performance gaming, pro video editing and graphics intensive applications.

Apple wants to be FIRST and BIGGEST with something, so they wanted a new peripheral they could start with.. and intel was sure along with them.
Even if Thunderbolt isn’t a success with PC’s (considering it doesnt exist yet..), it doesn’t matter, as every MBP will be shipped with the port.. its bound to gain popularity by all semi-nerdy folks. It will gain popularity enough to survive.

I’ve been waiting to see Light Peak or Thunderbolt for a while now, but now that it’s here … it doesn’t seem like a big deal. I always thought FireWire was better than USB but it never really took off like USB. I have a feeling that Thunderbolt will have a similar fate.
