Researchers have found a beluga whale named “NOC” that lived at the National Marine Mammal Foundation has vocalisations were remarkably close to human speech. NOC died 5 years ago and the research is now published in the October issue of Current Biology entitled “Spontaneous human speech mimicry by a cetacean”.

In 1984, researchers started hearing sounds near the whale and dolphin enclosure that recalled two people speaking in the distance, too far away to be understood.
