University of Illinois researchers have developed the world’s smallest working 3 x 3 x 1mm hydrogen-fuelled “micro fuel cell”. This fuel cell contains a water reservoir, a thin membrane, a chamber of metal hydride, and an arrangement of electrodes.

This tiny fuel cell can output 0.7 volts and a 0.1 milliamp current for about 30 hours before it runs out. With improvements to the current model, we can see this will work great on mobile devices.
