LG PC Blu-ray/HD-DVD Drive Preview

Posted in Storage by AURUM3 NewTech on the May 9th, 2007

ExtremeTech has done a preview of the combo drive and found that the LG GGW-H10N drive has the ability to read HD-DVD ROM discs and burn data or movies to Blu-ray media. But it currently lacks the ability to read or burn HD-DVD recordable media, though HD-DVD recordable reading might be implemented with a firmware update. The rumor on the street is that the LG drive will cost upwards of $1,000, which puts it out of reach of most of us. It’s likely that the most cost-effective way to obtain one of these drives will be to buy it built into an HP PC, at least in the short term.

Pros: Supports playback of both Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies; burns Blu-ray media and all DVD and CD media.

Cons: Performance seems to be lacking, but it’s too early to draw any conclusions
