GameSpot Response to “Gerstmanngate”

Update: Gamespot has published a response to firing Jeff Gerstmann. Jeff was terminated on November 28, 2007, following an internal review process by the managerial team to which he reported. Legally, the exact reasons behind his dismissal cannot be revealed. However, they stemmed from issues unrelated to any publisher or advertiser; his departure was due purely for internal reasons.

This is from Jeff’s interview over at MTV, If you’re running a publication and you’re comfortable running infomercials and advertorials, they should be clearly marked as such. If you’re covering a game that you have a vested interest in, that should be disclosed. And I think if you’re striving to deliver unbiased, honest coverage of an industry, you should spell out the policies and processes that you use to meet that goal..

Gamespot Fired Jeff Gerstmann Over Kane & Lynch Review

Veteran GameSpot reviewer Jeff Gerstmann was fired after giving a 6.0 rating for Eidos’s Kane and Lynch PS3/XBox 360 game. Did Jeff get fired over possibility of losing advertising dollars from Eidos? Jeff said in his review that Kane & Lynch: Dead Men has a lot of promise, but nothing in this game works out nearly as well as you’d hope. The game also received an average score of 68% from Metacritic.
