Google has is using crowd sourcing by enlisting a team of North Korean citizen to chart the country’s gulags, nuclear facilities and golf courses. Using its community tool Map Maker, Google has managed to map the unmappable.

From Google blog:

To build this map, a community of citizen cartographers came together in Google Map Maker to make their contributions such as adding road names and points of interest. This effort has been active in Map Maker for a few years and today the new map of North Korea is ready and now available on Google Maps.

While many people around the globe are fascinated with North Korea, these maps are especially important for the citizens of South Korea who have ancestral connections or still have family living in the closed nation.

We know Apple’s iOS Map sucks. So nothing new here. Australia Mildura Police have been responding to rescue calls from motorists lost in the national park after being sent there by Apple new iOS Maps. The app actually thinks Mildura is located in the middle of the park itself.

Some of the lost motorists were not able to find the way out for more than 24 hours.

Google has informed that the new Google Map app for iOS is already been submitted to Apple for review. The question is how quickly will Apple approve it?

This would not have happened if Steve Jobs is still around. Yes, Apple should use their own map app but it has to work similarly or better than Google Map. Not worst!

Apple CEO Tim Cook has finally came out and say sorry for the substandard maps that were provided with the iOS 6 update on iPad and iPhones. He said in an official statement: “With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment.”

Tim recommended that people try alternatives by downloading competing map apps from the App Store while Apple works on its own maps products.

Last week, Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said Apple is “working hard” to make the experience better and valued the criticism of customers. She said: “We launched this new map service knowing that it is a major initiative and we are just getting started with it. We are continuously improving it, and as Maps is a cloud-based solution, the more people use it, the better it will get”.

Apple has basically failed to understand user requirements when developing an app. The company is focusing more on destroying Google by removing YouTube and Google Map rather than listening to users.

Apple is in crisis mode over the failure to deliver to user a proper mapping app on iOS 6 devices. Apple’s new map does not include street view and also show wrong information and locations.

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said Apple is “working hard” to make the experience better and valued the criticism of customers.

Looks like Apple is harking back to the days when Steve Jobs was outed and producing sub-standard machines such as the Quadra PCs.
