Just like how Apple has refreshes the iTunes logo recently, Microsoft has done the same with their upcoming Internet Explorer 9. Microsoft is aiming for a lighter weight and fresh modern look of Internet Explorer 9.

From Microsoft blog:

To reflect this in the logo, we focused on revealing only what is essential, reducing ornamentation that might call undue attention to the logo itself. To indicate speed and fluidity we applied more subtle shading and bevels than the IE 8 logo. The effect is an overall flatter and more lightweight appearance. To stay true to the Windows 7 aesthetic, we chose fresh colors and shades to complement the Windows 7 color schemes that IE9 is built on.

Microsoft released the beta version of Internet Explorer 9 which features a minimalistic user interface, hardware acceleration, and broader support for Web standards including HTML 5 and CSS 3.

IE 9 resembles Google Chrome with the merging of the location and search bars. Just like Chrome, Microsoft of removed most of the icons from the interface. There is also a more prominent back arrow button and smaller forward button. It is good to see a more simplified interface, but what developers really need is the browser to follow web standards. Otherwise, Microsoft will see a rapid plunge in the browser market share. IE has been the market leader for many years, but has been losing share to Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome.
