Panasonic, LG To Release Skype Ready HDTV

Skype is partnering with LG and Panasonic to release high-definition TV that is capable videoconferencing for home users by June. FaceVision and In Store Solutions SL will provide the high-definition Web camera for the service.

Skype on the Panasonic VIERA CAST-enabled HDTV delivers many familiar Skype features including:

  • Free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls
  • Calls to landline or mobile phone at Skype’s low rates
  • The option to receive inbound calls via a user’s online Skype number
  • Skype voicemail, if you have it set up
  • Being invited to participate in voice conference calls with up to 24 other parties

AT&T Unlock 3G VoIP On iPhone

AT&T has opened up the US iPhone to VoIP calls over its 3G wireless network. Previously you can only use Skype over WiFi.

From AT&T: We also stated that we were taking a fresh look at the issue and would promptly notify the Commission of any such change in our policies. AT&T has completed its review of the matter and today we informed Apple that, effective immediately, AT&T consents to Apple enabling third-party VoIP applications for the iPhone that use our wireless network, including our 2G and 3G capabilities.

eBay Might Close Down Skype

eBay says the company might have to shut down Skype due to a licensing dispute with the founders. Worst case scenerio is that millions of users will not be able to use Skype if Joltid Limited wins the case.

You can now remove Fring, and start using Skype on your iPhone for free. There are reports of drop outs if you have hacked the iPhone.

  • Receive calls to a personal online number on Skype
  • See when Skype contacts are online/available to IM or talk

The free Skype app for iPhone and iPod Touch will be available for download from the iTunes App Store sometime after Tuesday. You can use it to make calls and send instant messages to other Skype users for free, and you pay to call landlines or other mobile phones.

Apple will impose some restrictions on how you make calls, only WiFi but not data networks.

Skype 2.8 Beta For Mac With Screen Sharing

Internet phone and video calling software, Skype, has released beta version 2.8 for Mac. Now you can share screens while using Skype. The other feature is you can use your Skype credit to pay for Boingo Wi-Fi hotspots on a minute-by-minute basis.

Other features are Improved chat management, Quick Add People to Chat, Mood message chat, Large profile pictures, Hidden avatars in incoming contact requests and Add notes to contacts.

Skype 4 Beta Extends Video VOIP

Skype has made available a beta version of Skype 4.0 which the company siad it has undergone the most dramatic redesign in its short five year history. Joel Silverman, Skype president said, If I were to sum it all up, that is what 4.0 is about: the next leap forward in integrated communications.

In version 4, the UI has been redesigned to make it cleaner and easier to use. It places more emphasis on video calling. You can find friends in Skype directory easily. No date has been set for the final release.
