Microsoft officially wants to be Apple when CEO Steve Ballmer revealed a new direction for Microsoft to undertake hardware and online services as its future. There were already a whiff of this new direction when Microsoft announced the release of their own Surface tablet.

This is a significant shift, both in what we do and how we see ourselves — as a devices and services company. The work we have accomplished in the past year and the roadmap in front of us brings this to life.
Microsoft Steve Ballmer Says Windows 7 Tablet Is Only Months Away
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that Windows 7 Slate tablets and smart phones will be out in the next few months. Ballmer made the announcement during his keynote speech at the Worldwide Partner Conference in Washington, D.C.
The tablets will be built by Dell, Samsung, and Toshiba.
